In traditional medical doctrine, considering the solstices taking place in June and December, annual 365 days are divided into 6 seasons respectively, which are early winter, late winter, spring, monsoon, summer and autumn. Seasons naturally influence human bodies, causing many different types of diseases to arise. During spring, there is gradual rise in the heat coming from the sun, increasing the Bad-Kan element in our bodies, resulting in different bad-kan and cold related disorders. Therefore, emesis is regarded as the best preventive medication for Bad-Kan related illnesses. The four therapeutic measures for disorders are diet, lifestyle, medicine and external therapies, and emesis belongs to medicine category. Medicines are classified into two kinds: pacifying and evacuative and pacifying medicines are further classified into kinds such as liquids, powders, pills, pastes etc which act to bring 5 elements to a balanced state, eventually pacifying illnesses in mild ways. Whereas evacuative medicines accumulate the disorders in vessel organs and eliminate them through purgation and emesis in a hard way. It’s important to consider the patient’s health status and his/her body’s characteristics before performing the emesis and it can not be performed on patients who have poor stamina, wind related disorders, diseases caused by worms or tiny organisms, piles, abdominal cramps and also who are at an advanced age or below 16 years of age. Emesis can be performed on patients with indigestion, increased state of Bad-Kan element in the stomach, tumor in their epigastric region, tumor caused by poor eating habit, abdominal cramps associated with cold, stomach disorders, headache caused by combination of bad-kan and bile elements and anorexia. Additionally, performing emesis once in every spring is the best way to protect yourself from bad-kan related disorders.

During emesis treatment, specially prepared emetic medicines are given to the patients and followed by intake of boiled water with salts such as sallucidum or halitum violaceum for cleansing and it should only be conducted under the supervision of traditional medical doctors. Manba Datsan Hospital of Traditional Mongolian Medicine has exceptional emetic herbal medicines and doctors are conducting emesis treatment intended for not only stomach disorders, but also for lung disorders, including cleansing of bronchial tubes. Incomplete emesis treatment or without the proper post-therapeutic management, the treatment may result in causing secondary infection as well as complications of any underlying condition. Due to its efficacy in weight loss, many people are into taking emetic medications without consulting a doctor. Prior to emesis treatment, every patient should receive massage therapy and moxibustion as part of the preparation for the emesis and it also stabilizes the wind element. However, emesis can be conducted right away without any preparations during food poisoning. Emesis treatment has many benefits including enhancing your sensory perceptions, improving digestive heat in the stomach, leading to better digestion and contributes to the weight loss. In addition, it gets rid of bad breath, supports lightness of the body and improves the digestive heat associated with nutritional essence. Following the successful emesis treatment or generally in spring, one should intake food which is light and rough in quality with bitter, hot and astringent in taste and also having barley flour, meat of animals dwelling on dry land, boiling water and honey is highly recommended.
